Five major tech giants, including Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft, have committed over $3 trillion to AI infrastructure and data centers in the coming years. Google leads with commitments exceeding $1 trillion, while Meta surpasses $800 billion. These massive capital expenditures have turned free cash flow negative for some firms, sparking debates on ROI.

IT Home reported on October 31 that, according to a Bloomberg report published early in the morning of the 31st, AI infrastructure development continues to attract massive capital inflows. Five major tech giants—Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle—have committed to investing over $3 trillion (approximately 20.01 trillion RMB at current exchange rates) in data centers and related areas over the coming years.

As the race to build data centers intensifies, the disclosed commitments for leases, construction, energy procurement, and equipment purchases from these five companies have surged significantly. Some of this capital will be deployed in the short term, while other portions involve long-term contracts spanning decades.

AI Infrastructure Arms Race: Microsoft, Google, Oracle, and Other Giants Commit Over $3 Trillion

Google has made the largest spending commitment. According to regulatory filings submitted by Alphabet, total contractual obligations—including technology equipment, energy, and leases—exceed $1 trillion (approximately 6.67 trillion RMB at current exchange rates), nearly eight times the figure from one year ago.

Meta’s spending commitments have also risen sharply, with future expenditures totaling over $800 billion (approximately 5.34 trillion RMB). Nearly half of this amount is allocated to data center leases that have not yet taken effect, with payments spread over periods as long as 30 years. In an analyst call last week, Meta CFO Susan Li stated, “We expect to continue making substantial investments to support our core business and emerging AI initiatives.”

A major debate in the business world this year concerns whether tech companies’ hundreds of billions of dollars spent on building AI data centers can generate a return on investment. Although Alphabet and Meta are among the most profitable companies globally, their free cash flow has turned negative due to investments in new businesses expected to reshape the industry landscape.

However, not all spending by the five companies is dedicated solely to data centers, and disclosure standards vary across firms, making direct comparisons difficult.

For example, part of Meta’s budget covers consumer hardware products within its Reality Labs division, while planned expenditures by Alphabet and Amazon include content licensing fees. This tally also excludes other significant outlays such as existing leases and debt.

The combined future lease payment commitments of the five companies total $1.3 trillion (approximately 8.67 trillion RMB), while other procurement commitments amount to $1.9 trillion (approximately 12.67 trillion RMB). Except for Microsoft, the data was sourced from each company’s latest financial reports. Microsoft’s procurement and construction order data comes from its annual report as of the end of June; the company has not updated these figures since then.

Oracle was the first major tech company to see its free cash flow turn negative due to investments in AI data centers. At an investor briefing held earlier this week, Oracle projected a return to positive free cash flow by 2028 and plans to reduce upfront capital requirements through vendor financing and customer prepayments.
