Anthropic has donated its Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, aiming to establish it as a universal cross-platform format for AI agent capabilities. The standard uses a folder-based 'recipe-card' structure and has been adopted by over 70 platforms including ChatGPT and Cursor, with 1M+ published skills and nearly 280M installs. This move mirrors Anthropic's previous donation of MCP, leveraging neutrality to drive ecosystem interoperability.

Anthropic has now given ownership of its Agent Skills (a standard recipe-card format that any AI agent, including ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot, can read to learn a task.)to the Agentic AI Foundation, a neutral group run under the Linux Foundation.

In Agent Skills, each skill is a folder holding a SKILL.md instruction file plus any scripts or reference files an agent loads on demand.

Agent Skills began as a fix for Claude Code’s missing procedural knowledge and now runs inside rival products such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and VS Code.

Roughly a year after its October 2025 launch, Anthropic counts more than 70 adopting platforms, 1M published skills and nearly 280M installs.

Anthropic made the same move with MCP last year: build a standard that rival AI products adopt, then hand it to the Agentic AI Foundation

Since December 2025, 70+ agent platforms have integrated the standard, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code.
